Abstract:
I critically analyze Israeli-Jewish migration to Germany. I am informed by a view among many Israelis that associates Germany with the most tragic chapter in Jewish history. The study tracks the migrants’ reasons for making the move, families’ reactions, settlement in the new country, social and economic integration, construction of identity, and the perception of old and new antisemitism in Germany.
Uzi Rebhun is the Shlomo Argov Chair in Israel-Diaspora Relations and Head, Division of Jewish Demography, The A. Harman Research Institute of Contemporary Jewry, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
His books include, among others, Migration, Community, and Identification (Magnes Press, 2001), Jews and the American Religious Landscape (Columbia University Press, 2016), and A Double Burden: Israeli Jews in Contemporary Germany (with D. Kranz and H. Sunker) (SUNY Press, 2022).
