Neri Y. Ariel, Ph.D., Department of Talmud and Halacha, Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Dr. Ariel is currently a Selma Stern PostDoc-Fellow and guest researcher at The Free University of Berlin, where he also taught the last semester. As cooperation partner at the Institute of Jewish History in Austria (INJOEST), at the University of Vienna and at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), he researches Hebrew fragments on the understanding of Jewish-European traditions (http://hebraica.at). Ariel's Ph.D. research has focused on his discovery of a hitherto unknown genre within Judaeo-Arabic literature named Adab al-Qādi (translated earlier as חובות הדיינין and by Powers as “etiquette of judgeship”). His previous research was supported by a generous research grant from the German Ministry of Sciences (BMBF) as well as prestigious awards and renowned prizes. He has published about 20 peer-reviewed papers in three languages (German, English, and Hebrew), including encyclopedias, research reports and book reviews. The topic of his planned Habilitation/ postdoctoral research project reads: ''Comparative Research of the Adab al-Qādi Literature - on the duties of the judge between Islamic law and Geonic halacha''. In his talk Ariel will represent some preliminary insights of and reflections on this forthcoming project.
