The Center for Jewish Studies Heidelberg, Germany, offers a vacant job position for a PhD Position (m/f/d) in Jewish Studies for four Years

(TV-L E-13 75%; fixed-term employment), start: November 1st, 2022

The long-term project (twelve years; 2018–2029) Corpus Masoreticum: The Inculturation of the Masorah into Jewish Law and Lore from the 11th to the 13th Centuries: Digital Acquisition of a Forgotten Domain of Knowledge is funded by the German Research Foundation and kicked off in 2018 at Heidelberg’s Center for Jewish Studies. The aim of this project is to edit, document, and annotate the Western European (Ashkenazi) Masorah tradition of the 11th through 13th centuries, which differs from the oriental Masorah with respect to its philological content, layout, and mise-en-texte (masora figurata). The project's philological work has been integrated into a digital work environment from scratch (BIMA 2.0. Biblical Masorah database).

For this purpose, the Principal Investigator, Prof. Dr. Hanna Liss is looking for an exceptionally qualified PhD candidate to contribute their specialist competences to this project with a dissertation (to be written in German or English) on Ashkenazi Masora parva collections (details can be discussed in a potential interview).

Applicants should hold a university degree (Diplom, Staatsexamen, M.A. or equivalent qualification) in Jewish Studies, Bible Studies, or a related subject of an above average classification and have sufficient knowledge of Hebrew and Aramaic (Aramaic may be acquired later).
Applicants should have excellent team-working skills and be able to demonstrate evidence of their academic knowledge, and be prepared for new experiences in an inter-disciplinary and interreligious context, as well as willing to reside in the Rhein-Main-Neckar region.

The position opens on November 1st, 2022. The contract will initially be limited to 24 months but will be extended for another 24 months once the funding of the third phase will have been released. Salary is based on TV-L (E-13, 75%).
